Yuma Bike Club is shocked and saddened by the tragic loss of our founder, friend, and competitor, Doug Flynn, who was struck down in a horrific accident while on the club ride the morning of September 24th. He was a very, very good man, husband, and father.
He was the driving force in starting the Yuma Bike Club and for the resurrection of the North End Classic. His endless energy kept him moving forward in everything he did in life. Argueably, he did more to advance cycling in Yuma than any other person in memory. He routinely gave tips to help others improve, worked with our youth racing program, and generally was a cycling ambassador to the Yuma community as a whole.
We miss you already Doug!
Welcome to the Yuma Bike Club
As of November 2008, Yuma Bike Club became a Non-Profit Arizona Corporation and has been approved for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status with the Internal Revenue Service. The goals, focus and mission of the organization have been updated to encompass the development of youth in the sport of cycling and to increase the awareness and facilities for cycling in the community.
About the Yuma Bike Club
YBC was established in June, 2006 and consist of roughly 20+ cycling enthusiast from the Yuma area. The club was established to grow the cycling base in the area so that it's safer to ride on the roads and more enjoyable riding together. Like a lot of riding groups, most of the riders have been riding together for many years. It was just a matter of time before we put a name and jersey on the group.
The club has several veteran riders with a wealth of riding and racing experience. This has lead some to believe that our group is for the hardcore cyclist only. After a ride or two with the "A" group it's easy to see why. But I think many will be surprised by the number of riders joining the club of all skill levels.
The growing number of cyclist joining the club with various interest has prompted us to make some changes. For starts, we are now organizing our rides so that there are regrouping points should the riders gets separated. And on days where we have lots of riders attend we will break our rides into A & B groups. The B group will focus more on a steady, moderate pace.
For those anxious to test their skills against others we have established a racing team within the club. We are a registered team with United States Cycling Federation and Arizona Bicycle Racing Association.
The overall goal is that we all enjoy cycling together. YBC welcomes men and women of all ages, from juniors to masters. And we would love to have you join in on the fun. There are a lot of benefits to becoming a club member. Aside from the member discounts our sponsors offer, club members have access to information about training, meetings, and online discussions. But most of all you will join a great group of cyclist that enjoy riding together. Sign up today and join the fun!
